The government has extended the validity for availing benefits under Phase II of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME) scheme for all approved electric vehicle models till December 31, 2020.

The extension will come into effect starting October 1 to December 31, 2020.

According to the letter issued by the Department of Heavy Industries, “ [It] has extended the validity of FAME-II certificates for all approved vehicle models (e-2W, e-3W, e-4W) under FAME India scheme Phase-II for a period of three months."

It added, all the vehicle models, including electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers, need to be re-validated on or before December 31, 2020.

In March 2019, the government had notified phase II of the FAME scheme with an initial outlay of Rs 10,000 crore for encouraging faster adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles and the development of its manufacturing ecosystem in the country.

The main focus of the second phase of the FAME scheme is to support the electrification of public and shared transportation and the program aims to support approximately 7000 e-buses, 5 lakh e-3Ws, 55,000 e-4Ws passenger cars, and 10 lakh e-2Ws through demand incentive. Privately registered e-2Ws are also covered under the scheme, however, greater emphasis remains on vehicles used for public transport or those registered for commercial purposes in e-3W, e-4W, and e-bus segments.
